Roberts & Son provides a complete range of utility solutions, including gas repair and replacement, maintenance, gas fitting, reinstatement, and waste material recycling.

We also offer specialist services such as flow stop, under-pressure drilling, and vacuum excavation. Additionally, we can undertake new gas supply connections, meter installations, and governor installations.

Given the potential for gas main failures to result in catastrophic consequences, our operatives must be highly qualified. Safety is our top priority. We ensure that all our gas operatives hold full accreditation, which can take several years to obtain. Regular re-certification and ongoing performance training and assessments are mandatory.

Roberts & Son delivers mains gas pipe connections, upgrades, downgrades, and relocations throughout the North West of England and North Wales. We strive to offer the best customer service possible, coupled with competitive pricing.

Not all properties have a gas service or even a gas main in the local area. If your property lacks a gas connection or has been previously disconnected, we can assist you. If there is no gas main in your area, we are available to provide advice on the matter.

New Gas Pipe Installations & Connections

To provide you with an accurate gas connection quote, we typically require your peak gas demand in kilowatts. This means calculating how much gas you will consume when all your gas appliances are switched on. In most cases, we also need a map or scale plan that clearly shows the desired gas pipe termination point, marked with a cross.

Gas Upgrades & Downgrades

In certain situations, you may wish to adjust the amount of gas your current pipe and meter can deliver. For example, if you are converting a property from an office to a restaurant, you may need more gas and additional pressure for appliances to work effectively. Conversely, a property with a large gas meter might benefit from a downgrade to save on gas bills.

For both upgrades and downgrades, we will need to know the new peak gas demand in kilowatts to provide you with a free quote.

Gas Pipe Relocations

If you need to relocate a gas pipe or meter, we can assist with minimal disruption. We handle the entire process, including meter removal, gas pipe alteration, and meter reconnection.

An example of when a gas connection relocation might be necessary is if the gas meter is causing an obstruction or if redevelopment is planned, requiring the gas pipe or meter to be repositioned. In such cases, we will need a map showing the current and proposed meter positions, clearly identified on a diagram.

Gas Disconnections

If you need to disconnect the gas supply to a property, we will first need to understand the reason and determine where you would like the gas cut off. For example, if site demolition is planned, we must ensure the gas is cut off at the site boundary to prevent any danger from striking live gas infrastructure.

Once all known gas supplies have been disconnected, our engineers will issue a site clearance certificate to confirm that it is safe to proceed with redevelopment. To issue a quote, we will require a map showing the meter position and the point where the gas is to be disconnected.

Understanding Gas Pipes

Gas pipes, also known as ‘supplies’, ‘services’, or ‘connections’, connect the gas main in the street to your gas meter. However, a gas connection alone is insufficient to access gas – a meter is always required.

Meters serve two primary purposes: they regulate the pressure, leaving the meter to 21 MBAR under normal operating conditions, and measure the amount of gas consumed by the National Grid, ensuring accurate billing by your gas supplier.

The gas connection pipe leading to a primary meter (the meter for which a gas bill will be issued) is sized specifically to meet the needs of the customer at that property. A gas connection will never be shared with a neighbouring property. The National Grid, or an approved gas transporter company, is responsible for the safety and maintenance of the gas connection pipe during its lifetime.

On occasion, mains gas pipes may need to be upgraded if a customer has particularly large gas requirements for a new installation or upgrade. This can extend the timescale for the work to be completed.
