The fundamental principle of District Heating Systems is to have a centralised heating plant that distributes heat to local heat exchangers, providing heating and hot water to multi-occupancy buildings, ranging from residential homes to office buildings.

What is a HIU System and How Does it Work?

Heat Interface Units (HIUs) serve as a crucial link between central boilers and the heating and hot water systems within individual properties. Typically installed in large apartment blocks, a single central boiler system—often referred to as an energy centre—supplies heating and hot water to the entire building. This approach not only reduces costs but also optimises the use of space within each flat.

The hot water generated by the central boiler system is transferred via heat exchangers to provide each apartment with on-demand heating and hot water. HIUs can also be integrated with other renewable technologies, such as solar PV or air-source heat pumps, to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
